Synopsis: Animal fables originated with Aesop, but the earliest surviving records come from the Latin poet Phaedrus, who introduced this genre to Latin literature. This verse translation of The Fables is the first in English in over two hundred years. It includes not only familiar animal fables but also prologues, epilogues, historical anecdotes, short stories, proverbs, comic episodes, and reflections of Greek and Roman life in the classical period. The Fables offer insight into Phaedrus’ life as an educated slave who earned his freedom. His lively and clear style entertains while imparting moral lessons. The translation is presented in a free version of Anglo-Saxon alliterative verse, reflecting the popular tone of Phaedrus' original Latin. An introduction by P. F. Widdows provides background on Phaedrus and the significance of these fables in Western folklore.
